Part new build and part refurbishment of the University’s Sports Centre on their Highfield campus.
The new state of the art facilities, include a large fitness suite, studio spaces, 3 squash courts, a spectacular climbing and bouldering wall and a café. The existing Sports Hall has also been brought up to Sports England standard.
The brief called for a significant reduction in operational carbon emissions and a passive design approach. Energy is minimised through the use of energy efficient systems and high efficiency lighting. The building is served by roof mounted air source heat pumps, which serve fan coil units, AHU and underfloor heating, with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery unit ducts.
The Sustainability team played a crucial role as BREEAM Assessors and due to the focus on sustainability an enhanced BREEAM AP role (including monthly on-site meetings) was provided with the sustainability team collaborating closely with the site team to ensure compliance and gather evidence for the final assessment. Their efforts culminated in the centre being certified BREEAM Excellent at the final post-construction stage.
Post occupancy evaluation will be carried out by Method in 12 months to allow comparison to modelled data and identify areas where energy usage can be refined.
