The Market Quarter project is a key part of the wider regeneration of Barnstaple Town Centre, supported by the Future High Streets Fund and North Devon District Council. This ambitious initiative comprises four interlinked projects designed to revitalise the town centre, enhance public spaces, and boost footfall by creating a more vibrant and accessible environment for residents, visitors, and businesses.

At the heart of the scheme is the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Pannier Market and Guildhall, transforming them into a high-quality retail and events destination. The upgrades will introduce new fixed retail units and modern infrastructure to support a diverse programme of markets, performances, and community events.

Boutport Street will be redeveloped into a dynamic mixed-use space, combining town centre living with flexible workspaces, while Butchers’ Row and Cross Street will be permanently pedestrianised—allowing traders to spill out onto the street and creating a seamless link between the historic core and the riverfront.

Improvements to Queen Street will enhance access to the main car park, with redesigned vehicular routes and a clear, welcoming pedestrian pathway into the town centre.
