The refurbishment and extension of the Grade II listed Midsomer Norton Town Hall has been delivered as part of a wider £2.8 million High Street regeneration scheme, under the High Street Heritage Action Zone—a partnership between Bath & North East Somerset Council, Historic England, and local stakeholders.
The project has transformed the historic building to improve accessibility, modernise facilities, and enhance its role as a community hub. Works included the reinstatement of the ground floor Market Hall, refurbishment of core areas, and the construction of a rear extension to provide upgraded meeting rooms, storage, and service spaces. The internal services—wiring, heating, and lighting—have been fully modernised, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and futureproofing.
The heating system in Phase 1 has been designed to allow seamless integration of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) in Phase 2, replacing the existing gas boiler. The second phase, now approved, will deliver additional meeting rooms, offices, a café bar, and catering facilities, all supported by a low-carbon heating strategy. The project also supports the council’s wider sustainability goals by reducing operational energy use and enhancing the building’s long-term environmental performance.
